Pilot Positions
An airline captain is the pilot responsible for a flight’s safety. A captain must pass a myriad of written and practical tests and have his/her performance evaluated on a regular basis. A captain must have seniority to hold the position. The cornerstone of aviation is redundancy, so there are always two flying pilots. The first officer (co-pilot) takes the right seat and assists the captain in preflight duties, paperwork and preflight checks.
