As a junior pilot, low in seniority, you will likely start on a reserve list as a backup pilot; there are reserve pilots for every pilot position. Reserve pilots are on call and 60 to 90 minutes from the assigned airport. A reserve pilot is usually on for a 2 or 3 days and off 2 or 3 days. If the assigned airport is near your home, reserve pilot is not a bad position. Away from home, a reserve pilot is often housed with other pilots, but may fly home at company expense on their days off. Again, seniority is the key to getting the best schedule.
